Does Walking Build Muscle?

Walking is one of the best habits you can add to your day.

But does walking actually build muscle?

For most people, no not a significant amount.

Walking and Strength Training Do Different Jobs

Walking is great for you but building muscle requires enough resistance to challenge your muscles and gradually increasing that challenge over time. This is called progressive overload.

For example, you might squat 50 pounds for 5 reps. Over time, you progress to 60 pounds or perform more reps with the same weight. That increasing challenge gives your muscles a reason to adapt and grow.

Walking increases daily movement, supports cardiovascular health, and increases energy expenditure without creating the same recovery demands as another hard workout.

Put both together.

3 days of strength training each week.

5 to 7 days of walking each week.

Together, they give you a stronger approach to improving your health, building strength, increasing fitness, and improving body composition.

The Bottom Line

Don't make walking do a job it wasn't designed to do.

Walk to move more.

Lift to build muscle.

Do both to build a stronger, healthier body.
